“All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women are merely players.
- Shakespeare
If all the world’s a stage and we’re all players, then it’s safe to say we can all learn a thing of two from the basics of acting. The foundation of acting is an actor asking him/herself, “What do I want from this moment in the play?” This is called an objective. Usually, the actor is trying to get something from another character. Then the work is finding different tactics to persuade the other character to give the actor what he/she wants, while simultaneously persuading the audience to be on said actor’s side. This is why the best performances are usually a “villain” who makes us, the audience, care for them and sometimes, if they’re great, recruits us to their side. This level of acting requires an expert in human behavior, and essentially, that is what you learn in acting:
How to recognize and understand human behavior, yours and others, and how to skillfully manage emotions, yours and others, to achieve your objective.
“An ounce of behavior is worth a pound of words”
“Acting is everything but the words.”
“The language of the body is the key that can unlock the soul.”
